about

When I tell the story of this record, I talk about meeting Rick Deja when we were 12 years old at summer camp. He was a brilliant saxophonist, even then.

When Rick moved to St. Louis a couple of years ago for a year-long post-doc at Wash U, we started playing around in my studio, taking familiar sounds and songs and reimagining them. Hasty Drinks the Tiger’s Heart evolved from that exploration, ripping through the jazz that was foundational for us both, but augmenting it through the lens of ambient, avant-garde, electronics, musique concrete, and big beat.

To build on the evolving vision for the music we were making, we partnered with drummer Danny Hommes and guitarist John Horton and, after some rehearsal and playing out, we committed this improvisational quicksilver to permanent memory. Bassist Darius Savage joined the fray later to anchor the bottom end.

It felt like a herculean task to cull all of that amazing sound into a dynamic power sledge of grove, texture, and melody, but here it is.

The album is called Beatification and it feels like we reach that state by the 42nd minute.

I am really proud to be a part of this and to have collaborated with such talented artists and reaching back to a 40-year-old friendship to find new territory and expression.
